Expose Ridiculous Research!
End Chimpanzee Experimentation!
World Week for Animals in Laboratories (WWAIL) will soon be here - April 17 - 24. We'd like to tell you what IDA is doing, and we urge you to participate as well.
This week, as part of a coalition, IDA sued the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for their failure to act on a petition to dramatically reduce animal testing. Our Mandatory Alternatives Petition asked the FDA to require that animal tests not be used where validated non-animal alternatives exist. This would bring the U.S. in line with the European Union, which has had similar regulations for over two decades. The coalition consists of IDA, the British Union for the Abolition of Vivisection (BUAV), the New England Anti-Vivisection Society (NEAVS), and the American Fund for Alternatives to Animal Research (AFAAR).
Last week, in honor of April Fool's Day, IDA unveiled our “Top 10 Reasons Why Animal Research is a Cruel Joke” in recognition of ridiculous and wasteful experiments funded by your tax dollars. These "studies" would be laughable if they weren't so tragic. The Top 10 List showed that even “cream of the scientific crop” experiments - funded by the NIH, approved by federally-mandated oversight committees, and published in peer-reviewed journals - added nothing to medical progress and told us nothing we didn't know already. Click here to view the entire list.
And we're asking all our friends to send a quick fax in support of historic legislation being considered in Congress. The Great Ape Protection Act, H.R. 1326, would ban all invasive research on great apes, and would grant all great apes "owned" by the government permanent retirement to sanctuaries.
The U.S. is the last known country to conduct invasive experimentation on chimpanzees. H.R. 1326, if passed, would effectively end all known chimpanzee experimentation, not only in the U.S., but also in the entire world.
Please click here to fax your U.S. Representative and Senator, asking that he or she become a co-sponsor of H.R. 1326 – the Great Ape Protection Act. A copy of your fax will also go to President Obama and Vice President Biden.
You can help stop ridiculous research! Experiments just as cruel and wasteful as those we've uncovered may be taking place at your local college or university. For our Top 10 list, we narrowed down hundreds of possibilities to ten – and that's just a sample from a few journals, for a few months. Contact IDA at firstname.lastname@example.org if you would like us to find examples of absurd experiments at a research institution near you. Then, you can rally around these studies and put pressure on these institutions by staging an educational demo for WWAIL.
Please make a commitment today to take at least one action for animals in laboratories during WWAIL. Here are just a few ways to get involved:
- Organize an event in your area, such as a demonstration or educational table, especially if you have a College or University near you. Email us at email@example.com to let us know if you will be planning an event. We can provide you with brochures and posters to help make your event a success.
- Send a letter to the editor of your local newspaper. You can find sample letters to the editor here.
- Distribute IDA brochures about the horrors of vivisection, and humane alternatives, for one day or the whole week.
Visit www.WWAIL.org to request literature and to learn about the many other ways that you can get involved. Or contact Hope Bohanec at firstname.lastname@example.org or 415-448-0058.
