cesar chavez with dogJoin The Petition Drive For A National Cesar Chavez Holiday

Cesar Chávez led the historic non-violent movement for farm worker rights, and dedicated himself to building a movement of poor working people that extended beyond the fields and into cities and towns across the nation. Lesser known is his passion for animal rights and  personal commitment to vegetarianism for the last 25 years of his life. IDA proudly recognized this great leader’s contribution to animal rights by awarding Cesar Chávez our Lifetime Achievement Award in 1992. The United Farm Workers (UFW) have continued Cesar's legacy by supporting pro-animal legislation. Sign the UFW's petition to honor Cesar Chávez.

On (or around) March 20 — the first day of spring — thousands of caring people in all 50 U.S. states and two dozen other countries get active to host educational Meatout events. In Portland, Oregon, IDA members will be at Pioneer Courthouse Square this Friday from 11 to 1 p.m. We'll be serving Smart Dogs which were generously donated by Lightlife Foods and vegan cupcakes donated by Sweet Pea Bakery in Portland. We'll be playing Meet Your Meat on the Free Speech Wagon and giving out Vegan Starter Kits and other literature. Other activities around the nation include colorful festivals, lectures, public dinners, feed-ins, cooking demos, food samplings, leafleting, information tables and more. Visit the official Meatout website!
