scamps demoVictory - Puppy Peddler Scamps Closes Its Doors

IDA's Northwest office is celebrating a fantastic victory - the recent bankruptcy and closure of Scamps Pet Stores, a five-store chain in Oregon and Washington. For nearly a decade, IDA and other Portland activists have been educating the public about Scamps' scandalous business practices of selling puppy mill puppies.

omak suicide raceOmak Suicide Race - The Riders Volunteer - The Horses Do Not

The Omak Suicide Race is the most disgusting part of the Omak Stampede, a rodeo held in a small town in eastern Washington since 1935. The race regularly and routinely kills horses. Just since 1984, there have been at least 20 documented horse deaths. Next Scheduled Cruelty: August 6 - 9, 2009.

After a galloping start, horses plunge over an almost vertical drop of about 225 feet. The horses do not realize where the ground is until it is rushing beneath them. They cannot see horses ahead of them. This is documented cruelty. See more photos here, write a few letters, make a few phone calls!

This week, leading up to IDA's International Day of Action for Elephants in Zoos, the Associated Press published a great article by Evelyn Nieves called "Animal Activists Decry Expanded Elephant Displays." The article appeared in more than 100 different newspapers and on news web sites around the world. Eight AP photos (by Rich Pedroncelli) distributed with the article show the stark differences between zoos and sanctuaries like the Performing Animal Welfare Society (PAWS) in California.
