NIHIDA Accelerates Campaign For Non-animal Scientific Research

IDA’s campaign to convince NIH peer reviewers to fund non-animal, human-centered scientific research intensified this week. We had already released our 25-page report detailing cutting-edge non-animal research methods, the broken NIH peer review funding system, and the fundamental problems with “animal models.” This week we contacted the reviewers of grant applications submitted by research facilities under the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act. We urged them to fund non-animal methods and infrastructure for research facilities that do not use animals. Click here to read more, and to send your own e-mail supporting non-animal research funding.

“I chose to be vegan initially as an energetic pursuit, as meat and dairy slowed me down, but have since become convinced that it is not only the most healthy way to live, but also the most compassionate and ecologically responsible way.” -Woody Harrelson, World Go Vegan Week Supporter. Get involved with World Go Vegan Week (WGVW) in your own community.

World Farm Animals DayWorld Farm Animals Day

Each year, more than 55 billion land animals are abused and killed worldwide for their flesh, milk, and eggs. On or around October 2nd, people in all 50 U.S. states and two dozen countries will observe World Farm Animals Day (WFAD) to mourn and expose this needless suffering and slaughter.

Join the global outcry by hosting an event in your community. Actions include candlelight vigils, funeral marches, memorial services, video screenings, cage-ins, die-ins, leafleting, information tables, and more. Visit the WFAD Action Center for ideas and guidance. Then register your activities to receive free posters, handouts, stickers, and more.

Don't miss this opportunity to speak out for animals in solidarity with people around the world. Visit http://www.wfad.org/ to find out more.

elephant QueenieUpdate On Elephant Queenie

It has been 21 days since the USDA confiscated Jewel and Tina, but left Queenie behind in Leggett, Texas in the hands of the incompetent Will Davenport, who has gravely endangered the health of all three elephants. With each day that passes, IDA is more concerned about Queenie's welfare. She remains at the mercy of a man who has shown repeatedly that he is incapable of providing her with proper and humane care.

Even if you have already called the USDA, please take a moment today to leave a telephone message for the Secretary of Agriculture and email the Administrator of the USDA's Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service to urge the agency to return to Leggett immediately for Queenie and send her to a sanctuary where her safety and well-being can be assured.
